Cops for Kids with Cancer began as a result of a golf rivalry between retired Boston Police Capt. John V. Dow and members of Irelandโs Garda Siochana, led by Detective Pat Hanlon. Conversations that began over golf led to Capt. Dow, himself a cancer survivor, organizing WHAT KIND OF EVENT to raise funds to help children with cancer at a local hospital.
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THE FIRST EVENT? CURRENT WEBSITE IS UNCLEAR

THE BEGINNING
Capt. Dow officially established Cops for Kids with Cancer, and began raising funds and providing support to families with children battling cancer.
For several years, we only made donations to the childrenโs oncology units at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center. The donations were specifically earmarked for items or activities that would make an extended hospital stay a little less daunting.
The MIDDLE
In 2008, the Board of Directors established a process to provide funds directly to families with children battling cancer to help them face the financial domino effect that can come with having a child diagnosed with cancer.

NOW
Now we have a 20-plus person Board of Directors comprised of active and retired police officers, and friends of law enforcement.
Cops for Kids with Cancer has now distributed over $6.3 million to over 1,200 families since that time, and we continue to grow.
